old man powells house

(saint charles)

I grew up on mcclay rd in saint Charles and moved back as adult, there has always been a gravel rd off mcclay and growing up I never went down the road Bc there was a big tree cut down that said no tresspassing and you will be shot, so has a kid I never went down there. Now the trees not there anymore so a couple of friends and I went there. The house is from 1849 and is very historic and beautiful and a lot of damage has been done with people breaking windows and vandalizing this house and its a shame! I have been in this house 2 differnt times. The first time I went, it was me and 2 other friends and we was just walking around looking at all the old things and we went to the attic and we were up there looking fifteenth news papers and stuff when we heard a bunch of little kids running around laughing and playing and we all just stop and looked at each other intill it stoped. A other time my sister and I went here and we were walking around taking pica and looking at all the differnt old things in the house and we noticed that there were locks on the outside of the children's bedrooms to lock them in and we were talking about this and we heard a loud screeching Noise like some one pulled up with bad breaks and my sister and I was like o shit so we went to the window and no one was there so we were talking about going in the attic when we heard footsteps running across the attic. I think there starting to redo this house and I don't recommend Going there and if you do please do not vandalize this home. It is historic and is part of this areas history.

We were friends of the Powells who.owned that house. I have spant alot of time there and as eccentric as old man powell was, he was a good, smart man. I have spent the night countless times and ot once did I hear or fell any spirits. Im glad someone is finishing the house. It will be beautiful.

McClay/Powell House NEW
by: JCR

Wonderful old house built in 1829 out of the stones from the fields. McClay, the celebrated General of the War of 1812 started the house. Took 10 years to build. Many owners over the years all have had their own remodeling done. The original stone is in tack and the original floors. 2 fireplaces are still open out of 10. We have spent the last 36 days working on cleaning and clearing the property.
All is good. No hauntings that we can find or hear or feel. The natural wildlife is aboundant on the property.Setting on 9.46 acs, 2 streams and we found the wishing well. Open house will be Sunday,
June 24 from 1-5 pm. Come see for yourself. Use your imagination and historical knowledge to restore it. Some of the oldest trees in St. Charles Co are located on this property.

Powell House For Sale
by: Anonymous

I was always afraid of this house also. They posted a sign recently that it is for sale. Got up the courage to check it out and a woman who was watching the place said they are having problems with vandals. She said it used to be owned by the McClay family.
