Old Gilchrist County Jail Trenton, Florida

The Old Gilchrist County Jail was built in 1928 and closed in 1968. The house part of the jail was only added the last 2 years it was there. There were 2 sheriffs killed in the line of duty. Sidney Slaughter was shot and killed in 1934 by three unknown men committing a robbery. They have never been identified. And Mark Read in 1956, was shot and killed on a domestic disturbance call. Harley Conner was later executed for this murder. There are probably more murders , suicides, and violence committed there , but no more records of these events at this time. The jail is privately owned, but is available for investigation. You can contact the owner via the website for the jail.
