Mitchelleville Women's Correctional Facility

There is only one little girl on the prison grounds. she is known as Gretchen. She can be heard bouncing a ball in the Admin building. It is rumored that the prison was once a little girls school and she was a student. It is also said that when the grounds was a Girls Reformatory that she died there. There is a small graveyard with unmarked graves and graves with only numbers located in the southwest corner of the grounds. Unit Five is the oldest building on grounds. One of the guards says that while she was doing rounds she heard music coming from the basement of unit five which was and is currently condemned and vacant. She went down to check and there was on old trun dial radio in a locked room. The dial then started switching stations and abruptly shut off. She claims she did not have a key to the room nor does she think any one else does such most guards key chains are identical.

There is another little girl and have no idea if she was in the girls training school or from a family home she is older than Rebecca or if she was in the training school maybe she knows Rebecca.
She has an late 1800's early 1900's dress on.

I was an inmate there. I was put in unit 5 along with other inmates. There were 4 of us in the room in unit five. Something moved mine and my roommates fan while we were watching t.v and we heard someone bouncing a ball through the hall. Nights were worse. We could hear someone crying and heard footsteps and running. After awhile I got use to it. Other inmates and I got to go in the basement with a correctional officer and got to see the door to the little room where Gretchin died. The door in the basement would slam shut all the time.

I've been in the basement of Unit 5 & still never heard any thing. I've seen people die there but that's it.

I know this is anecdotal, however I know several former inmates from this facility. My grandmother being one, my mother being another, and several others. Upon separate hearings of the story, I gathered 2 of them that are still alive to verify with one another the stories.

One of the ladies, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that she saw this little girl bouncing her ball. She described her as a 5 year old, height approximately 3'9", and slim. Her hair color was Strawberry Blonde with Blue Eyes.

My Mother confirmed this.

My grandmother was in the facility when it was still for children. She remembered the little girl Rebecca, not Gretchen. Gretchen was the person that tied this little girl to the basement with chains. The little girl had asked for a little more food, but this was her punishment for asking about having more food. She said that she remembered the little girl screaming for days to be released. Everything that my grandmother said about the little girl fits what people are saying they see in that basement of Unit 5, which is located 4 buildings down from Admin to the right.

I remain a skeptic without empirical evidence. However, there are too many stories that match to say its not possible.

I did time at Mitchellville & I never heard or saw such a thing like that.

Her real name is Rebecca and she was chained to the basement of Unit 5!!! she was starved to death!! But she is not the only child to have died there either!!
