Milton , WV Morris Memorial Nursing Home

by Mark
(Barboursville, WV, USA)

This Nursing home has been many things including a Nursing Home. It has been closed now for over 2 years .

My wifes sister worked there for years and the things people saw while it was still open is enough to want to go back there.

I know of another group that went in there but the made the owners mad and they would not let them look through the whole facility in fact they would only let them into the outside buildings.

SO this is a scary place . It was a childrens TB house for years when it first opend.

They raised cows for meat hogs for pork and planted vegies in the garden, along with fields of corn.

SO this is a place that has seen lots of history and also many many many deaths in the years since it was built.

Would love to have someone to go with me there.

MARK Grove

I have been doing research on a woman who had a strong part in getting the Legislature to support this hospital. Her name was Caroline Gentry.
If you have any additional information about her, or the hospital, please give me a call.

Morris memorial nursing home NEW
by: Cherry

Went to see Morris memorial nursing home today. I went inside a little on the first floor. There was no one around. I saw no signs saying to stay out. It felt so lonely. There was nothing left in the places I saw. Would love to go back with some others who would like to look around.

Curious & Sad NEW

I have read all the comments here and it makes Morris Memorial Nursing Home sound scary but I was only there back in the late 60's to visit my grandmother who died there. The home and the grounds fascinated me at the time. I was in my early 20's and only been married a year or two when she died there. I always wanted to go back and visit the home and go in the room where my grandmother died but never did. Now it has been closed and not sure if it is even still standing but i would love to be able to take a tour inside but only with a male and other adults present. Based on the comments I have read here it sounds very scary. But I was only on the ground floor but if my memory serves me right (as I am now 70 yrs old) it was a long hall way and my grandmothers room that she shared with two others was near near the end. If anyone knows if it is still standing I would love to know and if there is anyone to contact that would take a group on a tour of the home and premises. Please comment here and let me know if this is still possible. My name is Wanda and thanks.

Beautiful and Freaky NEW
by: Anonymous

My mom, sister, and I all went there today. I nonchalant told my mom that there is a man sitting in a chair by the window. It kinda freaked her out but didn't really think anything of it. Then a separate time when my mom went to take pictures, she got one with a tree covered in Vultures. Today my sister swears she saw a woman in the window and I saw a beautiful girl standing in the middle of the road when I was with my dad one time. When I looked back, the girl was gone. When we left Morris, my mom told me to go on this page to see if I could find anything and as soon as I saw the comment about the vultures and the man in the chair, we freaked. That place is beautiful and freaky.

polio NEW
by: Emily

Just reread the description and saw where it says it was a TB house for children. I think this is false. Its founder, Walter Morris, created it after his neice died from polio. He wanted a place where children affected by this disease could be treated and live to their fullest potential. At the time of its thriving, Morris Memorial was a state of the art facility with most advanced machinery and skilled educators and nurses of the time. They made sure that any child with infantile paralysis had all the attention and care he or she needed.

And, anonymous and mark, if you're reading this, I can get you in, only it shan't be legally of course ;)

I'VE BEEN INSIDE MORE THAN ONCE (continued)
by: Anonymous

Other than those weird places, the building is pretty normal. So many places to explore. Mostly, it's rooms upon rooms. The recreation part of the building is pretty cool, but it winds back a while, and I got lost. There is a room with a sweet therapy bath that is still in there, with stretchers in it. One of the offices, where I guess guests would sign in, still has all the keys to like every place in the building. Adjacent from that is a room that still contains things that it should not contain: patients' files, police records, personal belongings, etc. We did find several stairways that led to nowhere also. Two of them just straight up led to a wall or cemented-shut door. Another was behind a wall in a hidden nook that led to an empty attic room.

I've been during the day, when it was just getting dark, and late at night. I have had just one weird experience when I've been there. My friends were all exiting the building. I was the last one out, but before I exited, I decided to unscrew a cool sign that was hanging by the door. In doing so, I let the door shut in front of me. It took about 2 or three minutes to unscrew the sign (I was using a spoon as a screw driver :P), and my friends continued to walk toward the car, leaving earshot. Just after I got the last screw out, I heard a very high-pitched little girl's voice talking. It could have very well been one of the girls I was with talking loudly from far away, but she said they just booked it to the car and no one was talking above a whisper.

Other than that, I haven't really had any frightening experiences, or even been freaked because of anything beyond passing cars. I love this place, and it's worth seeing, even if you never go inside. If you live nearby, study up on it, then go there and walk the premises, and it is worth the experience!

I'VE BEEN INSIDE MORE THAN ONCE
by: Emily

Morris Memorial is amazing. The sheer enormity of it is enough to leave me floored. I think it's gorgeous, and every time I visit, I'm more enthralled with its mysteriousness and history.

I've been inside 4 or so times. It takes hours just to find all the corridors and wards. The basement is, by far, the creepiest and my favorite part. I don't know what the basement originated as, but it looks like recently it was used for storage, maybe maintenance purposes. In one part, right under the smoke stack, there is a compartment where things were burned in order to help heat the entire building. Beside that, there is an underground shaft (with cart rails in the dirt floor) that leads from that end of the building all the way to another wing of the building. On the other side, the shaft opens to what I always called "the dungeon". It is a corridor underground that has 6 or 8 concrete rooms, almost like an underground jail with restraint rooms. It's so weird. That is pretty creepy. We also found a few other tunnels inside the building that were like dirt-floored, and led to the inner workings, housing pipes. But it was weird that there were tunnels (with little alcoves along the walls) leading to places like that.
