IPS school #78 Indianapolis

I went to this school back in the mid 90s. They story behind this school is that it was built on an old graveyard. In the second floor girl's bathroom there was a locked cage used for storage. If you went in that bathroom during certain times of day you could hear what sounded like a man or woman groaning. The cage would start rattling. If you were in there after school which a lot of times I was because I was in math club you would see a man or woman in the cage. It was locked so no students could access it.

School 78
by: Anonymous

I attended 78 from 1945 through 1950, until we moved and I attended School 54. Anyhow, my favorite teacher was Phyllis Prentice. The principal was Laura Wadsworth. My first grade teacher was Jessie Misch. At that time we had shop also—wood shop and printing. Like others I walked to and from school, including lunch time. I lived on Michigan Ave., and that house was torn down at sometime and became a parking lot for RCA. My dad and mom both worked at RCA. We had the grey y after school. At Christmas all the classes gathered in the auditorium and each class stood up and sang a Christmas carol. At the end of the school year, the classes participated in games, and Mr Kean kept the records. I only have fond memories of 77.

A long time ago NEW
by: Pat

I attended #78 from 1949 to 1955. The teachers back then were wonderful and we learned a lot. I remember paper drives with the papers being stacked on the grass on Vermont Street. The fire department on Sherman Drive let classes visit and we could slide down the fire pole if we wanted. We walked home for lunch every day no matter the weather. The playgrounds were pea gravel and I don't remember anyone getting hurt. We got to clean erasers out by the big chimney by clapping them together--no hitting them on the building.

I attended School here as well from k-8th grade. 1965-1974. It was and still is a very special school in my heart. We lived on Robson St right across the st from the playground and we spend many wonderful hours in that playground after school all of us neighborhood kids! Loved the teachers and the old building as well!! I moved to Ky and attended high school and left the wonderful childhood there!

Thank you Anonymous!! I attended the school from 1960-1969. It was a wonderful school! Remember Mrs Woodworth, the principal? And I believe the kg teacher's name was Mrs Cottom. The neighborhood was nice then too. My brother attended from 1956-1964. Good luck and I would certainly love to read your book!

New Book on IPS 78 NEW
by: Anonymous

I would love to read your book, I also attended school 78 before and after the new addition and the changing of the "feeder" school from Howe to Tech High School. The neighborhood was perfect, I lived on Pleasant Run Parkway and walked about a mile to and from school with no worries, no concerns of the area. It was home! A great school with wonderful teachers. Good luck with the book!

My recollections NEW
by: Anonymous

I went to IPS School # 78 from kindergarten through eight grade before the neighborhood deteriorated. Because I have have many derogatory remarks about the school from those who attended later, I am writing a book about how the neighborhood was then and t will be located in the downtown library in Indianapolis.
That neighborhood was actually one of the more respectable ones that time. we all knew each other and we had autumn fairs, carnivals etc. The school was an integral part of the neighborhood and I remember it before the later addition was added, the part farthest away from Sherman Drive. There was no haunting. And as for a graveyard ID never heard of that either. Rather the school was the place the community met and had fun!!
