Bayview Bridge, Minor, Ala

by Cassandra West
(Mulga, alabama, jefferson cty)

The old Bayview bridge was a cast-iron bridge, over a man made lake. Before the bridge was rebuilt many years ago, a school bus crashed and was taken hostahe ny the lake. Noone survived. Many wrecks have happened on thay bridge since then. Not too far from the lake, a bulding caught fire amd leaked into the lake. Killd al form of life and was later replinished. Not only that, the entire city of Bayview, now considered Mulga, is on top of old mining grounds. Unmarked graves rest around Nayview dam. stories of glowing lights and voices have been reported from hunters from the town. To top all of that, there is a cemetary, Village Falls Cemetary, there are headstones marked from as early as the 1700s. The giant tree in the center was used for KKK members to hang slaves on. Noone has been brave enough to stay there after dark.

cry baby bridge NEW
by: Bayview Gal

The way I heard the story of the Cry Baby Bridge was that a mother and child was crossing the bridge that crosses 5 mile creed on Walkers Chapel Road in Fultondale. The car left the road and crashed into the creek that was swollen with water from recent heavy rains and the mother survived but the baby was swept away and drowned. I really think the stories come from the whining sound the tires make on the steel mesh bridge.
In the early 1970's there was an accident where a lady and her baby ran off Bayview bridge and drowned but that was long after all the ghost stories were started.

stories I heard NEW
by: Bayview Gal

Several years ago the Birmingham news published some of the local ghost stories and The Bayview Bridge Lady was one of them. According to the news The ghost is supposed to be a lady that lived in Edgewater back in the early 1940’s that had hired a lady in Bayview to make her wedding dress. It was before everybody had care and people still walked most everywhere they went. It was stated that the girl had gone to her final fitting and was on her way back home with her dress when she was attacked by a pack of wild dogs and killed.
Our favorite past time as teen agers was to go ghost hunting, and pull ghostly pranks. I can assure everyone that if there was ever a ghost within a mile of that bridge or cemetery I would have seen it. The only thing I ever saw that I couldn’t explain was some lights in the cemetery. My friend and I were coming home from working our job at a local drive in about 2 am. When we came into Bayview we could see dozens of white lights that seemed to be up in the big tree in the middle of the cemetery. It almost looked like the lights in trees at Christmas time. By the time we got to a place we could turn around and go back to investigate they were gone. We rode out to the gate of the cemetery and saw no body or nothing strange.

Some truth in most of these stories NEW
by: Bayview Gal

It is true that Phylis Dean Carver was abducted from the Ensley Theatre I think the year was 1949. She was found raped, mutilated and murdered near Bayview Lake but not near the bridge. I am almost sure it was near an old cemetery on 269 near where the lake goes under the highway. It may have been named Lakeview Cemetery. I use to work with the childs sister and got to know her parents quite well and they always said they felt like they knew who killed her but he was a very prominent man in the community and they didn't have any proof just their own suspicions. There was a school bus wreck on Mulga Loop Road before the new bridge was built but it was not on the bridge and only one girl was killed and her name was Cathy Echols I think the year was 1969.

Get Your Facts Straight NEW
by: Anonymous

I don't know where some people get their information. Phyliss Carver's funeral service WAS held at the Church in Freewill and not the community center in Bayview. How do I know? I was there. I was also at her house when her casket was there for visitors.I belonged to a small kids group at the community center when I was a child called "the sunbeams" (It was never a church-They sometimes held live plays there that had nothing to do with religion. Sheriff Clemon's little office was close to it. On the otgher side of the sheriffs office was the opening to Bayview mine which had played out years before. we boys used to go down aways pretending to be miners. The brick house on the hill up from the commissary was a doctors office where I received my first vaccination. When Phyliss was killed her teacher was Mrs. Hamrick at Bayview Elementary. My teacher was Mrs. Patrick. My father was on the search party looking for Phyliss. She was dropped at the Ensley Theater by her movie to see the movie "Angels With Dirty Faces". Her mother and younger sister went on to see another movie in Fairfield.I can take you to the exact spot where her body was found. I remember her parents were in an awful way at the funeral (which was natural) my father was one of the men who walked from the church in Freewill to the grave-site with her father.

PLEASE have a bit of respect... NEW
by: Anonymous

Phyllis Carver was BURIED at FreeWill Cemetery in West Jefferson, but her funeral was NOT held at the church there. Her funeral was held in a TCI company building that was serving as the church in Bayview at the time. This church was located next to the current parking lot across from the Bayview ball park. If you face the old Bayview Store while standing in the road between the ball park and the parking lot, there is a two foot high concrete foundation to your immediate right that joins onto the parking lot, and this is the foundation of the old church building. Because there were two congregations, Methodist and Baptist, but only ONE building, the Meth and Bapt met together every week, and swapped preachers each week. one week, the meth pastor would preach, and the next week, the Bapt preacher -would preach. This went on until TCI closed the mines, and the Baptist church purchased their current building, and the Methodist built their current building.

That is a great community...It has really changed in the past ten years because all of the original people have all moved away or died and those who move into the homes do not have quite as much pride as they did so many of the homes look trashy...but I STILL love it !

My visit NEW
by: Shirley Graves-Owings-Childress

Today was an emotional one for me; my daughter and I visited after so many, many years, my old home place at 307 Pine Avenue, Bayview, Alabama. We stopped at the cemetery and looked at some of the folks buried there: many I knew away back in the 40's and until 1951, when my dad passed away. It would have been wonderful if I could have just spoken to the folks at 307 Pine Avenue and 302 School Road. The houses have been updated and look nothing like they did when I was a kid playing in the old coal streets. We often looked forward to the popsicle man who would push his cart down those streets. We were too poor to buy anything. It was so nice to see the serenity that prevails in the Bayview Camp and to see the old commissary where I would walk to get groceries for my mother with the grocery stamps. The old ice house is not there anymore. I would pull my red wagon to that old ice house to get ice for our "ice box". And, the old bridge is not there, but the aura is still the same. I comment because this has been a wonderful emotional trip for me to go back into the past. Thank you for the site whoever is responsible.

My home town NEW
by: Anonymous

My parents, Maggie and Charles Graves, moved to Bayview when I was just a little child. We lived on what used to be Pine Avenue and then moved to 302 School Road. I have fond memories of the old Bayview bridge, and remember very vividly when Phyllis Dean Carver was killed. I was only her age and lived not too far from her. My daddy worked at Fairfield Steel Mill until his death in 1951 at which time mother and the siblings at home moved to Childersburg. Daddy would take me to singings and we would have to take a bus all way to where we went, and never did I hear of any weird reports of ghosts, etc. near the bridge. I do remember a house being on the left side of the highway immediately after crossing the bridge and cannot remember who lived there, but it was always scary to cross the lake. It has been my intention to go back and visit where I used to live. My sister, Nell, and I would walk to Mulga to get our mail from the post office. It always terrified me to think that we walked alone but nothing ever happened to us as did Phyllis Carver.

close but not exactly... NEW
by: Anonymous

The ghost is of a 9 year old girl named Phyllis Carver that was killed in 1949. She had gone to the movie theater in Ensley with her family on Sunday April 10, 1949. Found the next morning at the edge of the lake raped and mutilated. 3 years later her cousin was arrested & spent 7 years in prison before being exonerated. the actual killer was never brought to justice. The haunted cemetery is the old Lakeview cemetery, not the newer Village Falls cemetery at the walking track across from the Masonic lodge. You dont believe the lake is haunted go on the anniversary of the murder and call out the right name!

WHAT A STORY NEW
by: Anonymous

I think this is the craziest thing I have ever read in my life. The cemetery is very nice and I have been out in in many times after dark when I was a teen "parking and necking" so the deal of noone there after dark is a lie. If you are bold enough go give it a try yourself and the old bridge was not haunted either. I was put out one night and dared to walk across it at 1 am in the morning and I did and haunted???? that is a laugh! why write lies about a nice communtiy like mulga leave us alone!!!!!!1
